YOUR FRIEND BEHIND THE LENS

aloha, i'm megan!

A big part of choosing the right photographer for you is getting to know who's behind the camera. So hey there! I'm Megan & I'm incredibly proud to say that I was born & raised in the most beautiful place in the world, Hawai'i (the island of Oahu to be exact)! The food, the people, the culture, the Aloha...it's unbeatable. Here's a glimpse into my life...

My Anchors

We have an amazingly talented & athletic son, Miah, and he's officially a teenager (ahhh I know!). I've also recently come to accept that he is significantly taller than me but let's be honest, everyone is pretty much taller than me as I stand at a full 5 ft. I am a proud bonus mom and watching Miah grow into the young man he is today has been the best and most rewarding adventure of my life!

But nonetheless, we love our crazy Nala girl (especially my husband even though he tries to deny it haha).

last but not least, nala!

our son (miah)

Fun fact: We met in a drive-thru Starbucks where he was my barista!

...and we've been married for over 3 years now. The best way I like to describe Makana is "Mr. Aloha!" He absolutely loves people and always seeks to serve on others. Sometimes he tags along on my sessions (as long as I pay him with food), so if you're lucky enough, you might get to meet him!

my husband (makana)

in 2021, my husband’s friend’s ex-girlfriend (yep think about that one) announced on social media that she was selling her Canon Mark IV 5D with a Tamron 35mm lens and something in me stirred. Thank God I listened to that calling because now, 2+ years later, I have been able to step away from my full-time job to become a full-time photographer and entrepreneur. It’s been a crazy, life-changing, wild experience and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I’ve met the greatest people (you guys), traveled to insane places, captured numerous love-filled weddings, opened a studio (Shutter Haus) with my best friend (hey Kris!), and found a community where I can be loved and accepted for being me.

After college, I worked a few corporate jobs and thought that would be my life for the rest of my life. For some reason, I tried to get into photography in 2019  but then on Halloween Day, our home was burglarized and the robber took my brand new camera & equipment before I even really learned how to use it. How did I handle it? I didn’t haha. I took it as a sign to NOT go down that path and I listened for a 1.5 years never giving it a second thought.
For a long time, I believed my path in life was to be a lawyer. I majored in Political Science for my undergrad in Los Angeles, CA, was an active member of the Pre-Law Fraternity at my University, interned at the LA City Attorney’s Office, took practice LSATs for fun in my spare time, blah blah blah. And hey, if that’s you, there’s nothing wrong with that! But for me, as I started to reflect on why I was doing the most to try & become a lawyer, I realized it was for all the wrong reasons.

the second chance

A Blessing in Disguise

the original path

Photography was never a life-long passion of mine. I didn’t even think it would be an option for myself in terms of “careers.” But what I have always been passionate about is making an impact, uplifting others and building community. Who would’ve thought that I would find all of that in photography? Not me! Hover over the timeline below to read more about my journey below!
